The history of social media and addiction

Updated: May 4, 2022

The first-ever social media was invented on May 24, 1844, with a set of electronic dots tapped out by people’s hands on a telegraph machine. A person named Samuel Morse used the first-ever social media to send a message from Baltimore to Washington D.C. No advanced technology or system was installed.

About a century after in 1969, ARPANET(Advanced Research Project Agency Network) emerged. It was mostly used by scientists to share their software, hardware, and other resources with one another.

In 1979, social media became more popular when NSF launched faster, and more digital networks named NSFNET. A decade after, the first true social media that we use these days was made. It allowed people to interact with others by sending a message through the internet, email, and posting some pictures online. Six degrees, AOL Chat Rooms, and Myspace are some famous early social media platforms.

Until then, social media wasn't a part of people's daily life, nor any addiction didn't exist. It was just a way of interaction and communication. However, some people started to express themselves using it. Some people uploaded funny pictures and videos such as memes and gifs which sometimes included swearing. That is how the addiction began. It became more important to get more followers on Facebook or Instagram than to send messages to one another.
