MY CENTRAL IDEA

Understanding the safe usage of different types of social media to reduce the effects on our daily lives and bodies of addiction

"Understanding the safe usage of different types of social media to reduce the effects on our daily lives and bodies of addiction" is a central idea I chose to work on for the past few months. Earlier this semester, all the students in 6th grade had to find a topic for the PYP Exhibition. I thought it wouldn't be interesting if I worked on Global warming or things already discovered by a lot of people. It wasn't easy to find something interesting and new. While I was stuck on choosing a topic, I noticed every single person in the subway is staring at their smartphone. Yes, they were using social media such as Facebook, Line, and Youtube. Then, a great idea popped into my mind, Social media addiction.

The next day, I started to work on my PYPX unit planner. I researched social media addiction and got suggestions from my peer mentor and Mr. Ish, 6th Grade homeroom teacher. After I got my 3 Lines Of Inquiry, I had to write my central idea, including all information on the 3 LOIs and this is what I came up with.

EXCHANGING INFORMATION

Interacting with others

Exchanging information is a huge part of my exhibition. I had to do some interviews, send a survey, and listen to the expert. I tried my best to understand why people are overly into social media and share the information online. I questioned my friends and myself about why we use social media and what makes it so addictive. Exchanging information is a nice way of finding a solution and quenching my curiosity.

CREATIVE

"Think Different"

"Think Different" was told by Steve Jobs who founded one of the biggest Multinational Technology companies, Apple. As he said, I wanted to try different things and be unique. I didn't want to try something that has been done by so many people that it just became a rule that everyone who is working on PYPX has to design a poster and video. The biggest lesson I've learned from the project is that taking action and trying something new is a whole different thing than just thinking about what to do.

ORGANIZATION

Organizing information in the right place

Managing data in the proper place is one of the most challenging and essential parts of the project. Personally, taking action and researching was the most interesting part which included a lot of organizing. Annotated Bibliography, notes, and essays were what I mostly organized in my research document.
